The Katsina State House of Assembly says it will pass the state’s 2017 appropriation bill into law within three weeks.

The House leader, Hambali Farouq, who is also the Chairman, House Appropriation Committee, said this on Friday shortly after presiding over a public hearing on the budget estimate.

Governor Aminu Masari had, a fortnight ago, presented the state’s 2017 budget estimate of N140, 162,092,690 to the House. The budget estimate is made up of capital expenditure of N92, 431,781,330 and recurrent expenditure of N47, 730,311,360.

Hambali told journalists that the lawmakers would begin proper deliberations on the budget on Monday. He said the public hearing was to enable members of the public, particularly the civil society organisations, to make contributions to the budget passage.

He said, “Normally, the budget passage will take us 13 working days. So, give and take, we should be able to pass the budget into law within the next three weeks.”

Some members of CSOs and other contributors advised the state government to strengthen the internally generated revenue mechanisms in the state, allocate more funds to the health sector and ensure speedy passage and implementation of the budget when passed.
