The Katsina State Government has reconstructed three primary schools, whose students were studying under trees in Malumfashi Local Government Area, an official said on Thursday. Shawai Alhassan, the Education Secretary of the local council said the three schools were located in Tudun Tune, Wari and Zuzzurfa villages.

He said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria [NAN] in Malumfashi, that 15 other schools were also rehabilitated by the state government. Alhassan said that the intervention in the 18 primary schools was in the provision of additional classes and complete rehabilitation of existing structures. The official commended Gov. Aminu Masari for the intervention, saying it would boost enrolment and retention of pupils in schools. Alhassan called for synergy between teachers, parents and communities to strengthen the school system to enhance excellence. He said that the local education authority had taken measures to enhance performance of teachers and pupils, and urged communities to also monitor schools in their areas. According to him, such partnership should be geared toward finding factors forcing pupils to drop out of school, and other causes of poor performance. The education secretary disclosed that the local council would engage instructors to provide skills training to pupils, to inculcate trade discipline at an early age. He said some of the primary schools in the area had been provided with 28 sets of computers each, to train pupils in computer studies. Alhassan added that the local council had also posted library scientists to man libraries recently opened in primary schools in the area.
