Katsina Assembly Begins Debate on ‘Procurement Act’ Bill Sponsored By Hon. Mahuta (Rep Malaumfashi LG)

Katsina State House of Assembly has commenced debates on a bill seeking to domesticates public procurement act in the state.

The bill, which is one of the few members’ bill, was sponsored by the member representing Malumfashi Constituency, Abdullahi Ibrahim Mahuta.

Speaking at the plenary, Mahuta said the move for the bill was informed by the need to ensure more transparency in procurement processes in the state.

“The presence of standards and legal system as embedded in the proposed law,  I believe , will also go a long way in curbing corruption by removing discretion and impunity in the awards of contracts.”

“When passed into law, this bill will encourage more transparent and credible procurement process in public service,” Mahuta added.

A cross section of members who spoke on the bill said it was long over due considering the need to engender more transperancy and accountability in public service especially finances.

After what passed for a robust debate, the Assembly referred the bill to a five man special committee under the chairmanship of the deputy speaker, Shehu Dalhatu Tafoki.

The committee was mandated to critically study the bill and make necessary recommendations to the House.
