OPEN LETTER TO GOVERNOR MASARI: THE NEED FOR DREDGING AND ESTABLISHMENT OF IRRIGATION FACILITIES AT GWAIGWAYE DAM, FUNTUA -By Zubairu Ahmad Rufa’i
We consider this as a privilege to express our gratitude for the emergence of this administration of the masses and for the masses. We therefore consider it necessary
to write and solicit for the dredging of GWAIGWAYE dam and establishment of irrigation facilities at the dam site.
Gwaigwaye dam is situated at river gwaigwaye in Funtua local government area of Katsina state. Farmers in the area cultivated more in crops such as maize, sugar cane, wheat, water melon, okra, and tomato. The area is blessed with abundant fertile land for both irrigation
and rainy season farming. But the dam needs to be dredged and expanded to contain the large irrigation area that is approximately 3000 hectares.
However, there is the need for the establishment of irrigation project office and facilities at the dam site under the supervision of Sokoto Rima River Basin Authority as GWAIGWAYE IRRIGATION PROJECT, FUNTUA. This call is necessary for the following reasons:-
(A) Irrigation plays an important role in controlling of drought and famine, insufficient, uncertain and irregular rain which causes uncertainty in agriculture.
(B) Productivity on irrigated land is considerably more than the productivity on un-irrigated land.
(C) Since annual rainfall is received in less than five months, multiple cropping is generally not possible. But provision of irrigation facilities can make possible the growing of two or three crops in a year. This will considerably enhance agricultural production and productivity.
In conclusion therefore, the dredging of GWAIGWAYE dam and the establishment of irrigation project in the area will make more portion of land cultivable and helps in stabilizing the output and yield level. It will also help in developing the income of farmers and imparting a sense of security and stability in agriculture.
